OBJECT
To raise money through a dedicated event sponsored by
the HPAAC (and soon the HPAC/ACVL), for improving
the system for early detection and diagnosis of cancer
through the Canadian Cancer Society.
DEDICATION
This event is dedicated to the memory of Mark Dempsey
(July 17, 1957 - March 25, 2011).
Mark was a dedicated
Maritime pilot who loved the sport. His generosity
within his community was inspiring as was his willingness
to share his time promoting the sport he loved.
Mark died from liver cancer.
DATE
The long weekend in May.
THE EVENT
- An annual National event
wherein the day’s
total hours aloft accumulated by pilots across Canada,
either individually or as part of a gathering, are
used to generate funds for the Canada Cancer Society.
The funds will be distributed toward early detection
and diagnosis. At the moment the event is limited
to HPAAC.
- The time flown by pilots
is submitted to the Administrator of the Event
for tally and submission to the sponsors. If the
event is part of a gathering of pilots then one
member of the gathering will submit the group’s
aggregate to either the Canadian Cancer Society
(CCS) or to HPAAC (and in future to the National
HPAC/ACVL Administrator of the program). Once collected
the funds will then be turned over to the CCS
- The pledge for individuals will be X$ per
minute of air time. The amount per minute will be
determined from the maximum amount that the donor
is willing to pledge. The onus is then on the pilot
to fly as many minutes as possible for that figure.
Then the number of minutes is tallied to represent
the funds raised.
- The program is open to individuals or groups of
HPAAC (or HPAC/ACVL) pilots flying individually
or as part of a group anywhere in Canada.
How can you help?
There are two ways you can participate.
On the long weekend in May HPAAC
holds an annual Festival of Free Flight. We will
dedicate one day of that event to FLY FOR DISCOVERY.
- You can sponsor a pilot
for every hour or minute that he/she spends
in the air that day. Typically we consider ourselves
very lucky if we get two hours of airtime in
a day. So you could say for example, “for
every hour or part of an hour in the air I will
donate a dollar amount” or “for every
minute of air time you achieve I will donate so
many cents per minute”. It’s whatever
makes sense to you. Also, if you’re concerned
that the pilot might have too good a day you can
cap your participation by saying “up to
20, 30, 50 or 100 dollars”. Remember that
you will get a tax receipt from The CCS for anything
over $22.

You can sponsor a pilot by contacting the pilot
directly (of course you need to know how to get
in touch with the pilot of your choice). The pilot
will get in touch with each sponsor personally after
the event to thank you and to arrange fulfillment
of your pledge.
- You can also make a direct
donation to The
Mark Dempsey – Fly
For Discovery using our Pay
Pal button below. If you like, you can donate
on behalf of a particular pilot or pilots by clicking
on the "Add special
instructions to the seller" link just below
your name on the Pay Pal site, but you don’t
have to specify a pilot - a blanket donation is
fine.

HPAAC has taken the lead in
this campaign. We’re working with our sport’s
National Association HPAC/ACVL and the Canadian
Cancer Society to ensure that by next year, for
one glorious day in the spring, the air over Canada
will be full of wings, Flying For Discovery.
